Motorcycle Rider Training - Notes

Checking Your Licence

Before you can ride a motorcycle on the road you need a driving licence. You can get an application form for a provisional licence from a Post Office.

If you have a car licence then you need to check that your licence has provisional category A entitlement, you’ll find this information on the paper part of the two part photo-card licences under provisional entitlement, or on the back of your older type paper only licence.

Most people will have this entitlement, but a few licences were issued without it. If it’s not on your licence then you need to apply to have provisional category A added.

This page on the Direct.gov web site explains what the letters on your licence mean and what motorcycles you can ride.

To undertake any training beyond CBT you must have a valid DL196 Certificate to validate your provisional category A entitlement.

To undertake Post Test or Advanced motorcycle training you must have a Full Motorcycle licence with either category A or A1 entitlement.

You must be able to read a number plate from 20.5 metres (67 feet). If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses, don’t forget them!

Footwear

Whilst riding a motorcycle you should wear suitable footwear. Unfortunately we cannot loan motorcycle boots for use during your training.

Below is a list of footwear, in order of preference:

  1. Motorcycle Boots
  2. Walking Boots
  3. Other Boots (without steel toe caps)
  4. Leather Shoes

Below is a list of footwear which is not recommended:

  1. Trainers
  2. Steel Toe Capped Boots
  3. High Heeled Boots/Shoes
  4. Wellington Boots
  5. Open Toed Shoes
  6. Flip Flops!

Your safety is paramount, arriving with unsuitable footwear may (at your instructor’s discretion) result in your training being postponed or even cancelled.

Additional Training -CBT

Please be aware that although CBT is not a test some people do fail to reach the required standard of safe riding within the one day.

If you need further training beyond the one day you will have to pay additional fees.

Additional Training - Test Modules One and Two

None of our training courses are offered on a guaranteed pass basis.

Should you fail either of the DSA tests, further training will incur additional fees.

Re-taking any test will also incur addition test fees and motorcycle hire charges regardless of whether you undertake additional training.
