Your Route to a Motorcycle Licence

The rules regarding getting your full UK motorcycle licence can seem complicated, below is a brief outline of the four steps you need to take. If you need any more details please contact Nigel who will be happy to explain your training and test options.

STEP 1. Compulsory Basic Training

As it says in the name, this training is compulsory, you must do this before riding any motorcycle on the public road.

When you have successfully completed your Compulsory Basic Training you can ride a motorcycle unaccompanied on the road as a learner. If you are under 17 then the engine capacity of your motorcycle is limited to 50cc and have a maximum speed 30mph.

If you are 17 or over the motorcycle you can ride is limited to an engine capacity of 125cc with an engine power of less than 14.6bhp.

You must also fit L plates which are clearly visible from the front and rear of the motorcycle.

As a learner you may not carry passengers under any circumstances or drive on motorways.

STEP 2. Motorcycle Theory Test

This test has two sections:

Section 1: Multiple choice questions, pass mark is 43/50.

Section 2: Hazard Perception. Here you watch 14 short video clips and identify developing hazards.

The whole test takes about an hour and a half.

You must have passed this test before you can book either of the practical tests.

STEP 3. Module One Practical Test

This is a very short test carried out on a special test course at a Multi-purpose Test Centre.

It consists of a series of manoeuvres that demonstrate your control of the motorcycle.

This test last only a few minutes, but it can be very difficult to pass without specific training.

You must pass this test before you can attempt the Module Two Practical Test.

STEP 4. Module Two Practical Test

This test is the on road practical riding test. During this test you are followed by an examiner who gives you direction instructions by radio and observes your riding for approximately 40 minutes. You are also required to answer safety and balance questions.

You must complete this test on the same category motorcycle that you used when you passed the Module One Practical Test.

Your licence category is determined by the type of motorcycle you completed modules one and two on, contact Nigel who will be happy to explain the licence categories and your training options.
